Iron Hearted Violet

In most fairy tales, princesses are beautiful, dragons are bad, kings are bold, and enemies are clear-cut and easily defeated. In most fairy tales, the princess doesn't save the world. Actually, in most fairy tales, everyone's pretty boring. This is not the case in Iron Hearted Violet, where the characters are as complex as they are unconventional. Princess Violet is not beautiful, but she is clever and brave. Along with her best friend, Demetrius, the son of the stable master, she explores the castle and "plays at stories." One day, the two children discover a hidden library, a mysterious book, and a strange and frightening painting. Violet's father goes on a quest to find the last known dragon for research purposes. While he is away, Violet's mother dies. Violet, angry and lonely, turns to the mysterious book and the story it holds- a forbidden story of a forgotten and long-sleeping evil, just beginning to awaken.
