Researching the Civil War Pension Records of African American Soldiers, Sailors, Servants, and Laborers with Elyse Hill CG

Saturday, February 15, 2020

2:00-4:00 pm

Multipurpose Room A

One of the most challenging, frustrating, and sometimes impossible tasks in African American genealogical research is finding information about formerly enslaved individuals before emancipation. Civil War pension records can provide rare first person accounts regarding the lives of Union veterans both formerly enslaved and free persons of color as well as individuals utilized as servants and laborers for the Confederacy. While this presentation will provide samples of information related to African Americans, it will also provide beneficial research information regarding any veteran who applied for a Civil War pension.

Ms. Hill is a graduate of the Institute of Genealogy & Historical Research (IGHR), the Researching African-American Ancestors and Advanced Methodology & Evidence Analysis courses, and the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP) Intermediate Genealogy course.

This program is co-sponsored by the Clarke Oconee Genealogical Society and the Athens-Clarke County Heritage Room.
