Oglethorpe County Library's adult book discussion group will meet on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 11:30am to discuss 1,000 White Women by Jim Fergus. This is a fictional recount of the U.S. government agreeing to send 1,000 white women from the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. This is better known throughout history as the controversial "Brides for Indians" program launched under the administration of Ulysses S. Grant. It was intended to help assimilate the Indians into the "white man's world." This novel is told through a series of journal entries from Mary Dodd who records the adventure of a lifetime.
