ESL Volunteer Materials

American Dream Curriculum

The American Dream Starts @ Your Library ESL Project was developed by Crystal Vicente and David Blandford specifically for the Hispanic patrons of the Pinewoods Library and the Athens-Clarke County Library of the Athens Regional Library System. This work consists of a tutor training manual including teaching content based on life experiences by the Hispanic Immigrant population of Athens, Georgia. The content of this manual has been derived from some of the typical experiences of this population group such as personal greetings, work, children and school, medical situations, making exchanges, and the like. The purpose of this work is not to replace ESL curriculums that are already in existence but instead is intended to be used as a guide for teaching and writing lessons. This work is intended to help facilitate language teaching by ESL instructors and volunteers that have had no formal teacher training. The material presented in this program is a compilation of works, presented in TPRS© tradition for providing comprehensible language input for acquisition. This work is a training tutorial and manual with sample content -that can and should be- added to and/or modified to fit the group for which it is being used. This manual does not make the presumption of being all-encompassing curriculum; instead the purpose of this work is to teach the ESL instructor/volunteer how to prepare and deliver a lesson with content based on the target population of his or her own region.
