Purpose and Scope 

The Athens-Clarke County Library has an immediate openings for a part-time, temporary Archive and Special Collections Field Work Intern starting in August 2017. This is a part-time, unpaid position with a flexible schedule of 8-10 hours per week, with a three-hour shift minimum, to end no later than April 30, 2018. Preference will be given to candidates completing the internship for course credit, and accommodations can be made per the requirements of the course. Graduate-level students with a focus in archival studies, history, historic preservation, or library and information science are strongly encouraged to apply. These positions report directly to the ARLS Head of Archives and Special Collections.

The successful candidate will gain experience in handling fragile objects, collection arrangement and description, and evaluating materials for preservation and/or conservation treatment. All equipment and training will be provided by the Heritage Room, where all work will be performed.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required, with college degree or college experience preferred. The successful candidates will have a demonstrated desire to work with library materials, will possess excellent communication skills, be detail-oriented, be able to work independently and as part of a team, and have fine manual dexterity and strong written and verbal communication skills. Bilingual skills (English and Spanish) preferred but not required.

Planned Learning Outcomes and Experiences

Interns will work under the direct supervision of Heritage Room Librarians to gain work experience in some or all of the following work of the Archives and Special Collections Department, accessioning collections of 19th and 20th century personal papers, administrative records, and maps.

  • Processing collections, including physical arrangement (sorting; cleaning; boxing; labeling) according to archival principals, with re-housing in archival enclosures.
  • Inventorying and describing materials; creating collection guides and other basic finding aids with appropriate index terms.
  • Entering appropriate metadata records into ArchivesSpace, the library’s collection management database.
  • Researching people or events covered by a collection.
  • Communicating and working cooperatively with other Heritage Room interns and library staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Personal computer proficiency with online databases, Internet search engines, and Office Suite.
  • Ability to work with people with tact, patience, and courtesy and exercise excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to learn digitization and scanning technologies and best practices for digital preservation including image capture and metadata creation.
  • Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
  • Physical ability to move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of Medium Work.
