Purpose and Scope 

The Athens Regional Library System has an immediate opening at the East Athens Library Resource Center for an individual committed to offering the very best library service to our community, an employee who consistently looks for ways to excel and improve. The library will hire an enthusiastic, innovative, and flexible individual who will proactively search for opportunities to make public library services relevant to all residents of Athens-Clarke County.

The East Athens Library Resource Center is a full service library housed on the third floor of the East Athens Community Center on McKinley Drive in Athens. This position is responsible for the day to day operations of the small library resource center, working with patrons of all ages. This includes, but is not limited to, providing a structured learning environment for children after school as well as during summer camp. The Branch Supervisor also offers outreach programming to the local community. This position reports to the Assistant Director for Regional Services and Outreach.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent is required, with college and library experience preferred.  At least one year experience working with the public is required. Successful experience working with children strongly preferred. Or, an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. Bilingual Skills (English-Spanish) are preferred, though not required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job.  Other duties of a similar nature or level may be required as assigned and job assignments, including schedule and night and weekend hours, may change in the future.

  • Manages daily Library Resource Center operations, including the following: opening and closing the library; basic facility maintenance; organizing and re-shelving materials; accepting fees and fines; routing holds, loans, and information; materials processing; performing basic office duties including answering telephones; keeping Assistant Director informed on Center activities.
  • Maintains and circulates Library Resource Center materials collection.
  • Plans and delivers programming for library patrons and community.
  • Provides assistance and training to patrons of all ages with the library’s online catalog.
  • Troubleshoots personal computers, printers, scanners, and fax equipment and assists patrons with computer use.
  • Handles all problems with patrons and expedites satisfactory resolutions.
  • Prepares and submits required statistical reports on library use and program attendance.
  • Maintains and submits required financial reports on the fines, fees, and gifts collected at the Center.
  • Publicizes and promotes library services in the community, according to established guidelines.
  • Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the library system as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Branch Supervisor.
  • Ability and desire for working with children.
  • Skill in public speaking and program presentation techniques appropriate to the targeted audiences.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to communicate successfully with patrons, staff, volunteers, and diverse groups of patrons, especially children.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established procedures and practices.
  • Personal computer proficiency and the ability to use, understand, and assist patrons with various computer applications.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the library's automated system and the ability to assist public in its use.

  • Ability to maintain simple records and make verbal and written reports.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to plan and prioritize assignments and activities.
  • Knowledge of all normal and emergency building procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office and library resources support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change mentally.
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.
  • Aptitude for creative projects such displays, crafts, decorations, and publicity.
  • Ability to walk, climb, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, and crawl in order to handle and manage storage and retrieval of library materials and equipment and physical ability to regularly and routinely operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computer with keyboard, telephone, printer and audio/visual equipment.
  • Physical ability to move or carry objects or materials.  Must be able move or carry objects or materials.  Must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds force frequently.  Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of Medium Work.
