This Library Assistant position will work with the Collection Management Supervisor with basic copy cataloging of books, spoken word, and DVDs as well as other cataloging duties while adhering to PINES cataloging policies.  This position will also assist the Collection Management Supervisor and Collection Management Librarian as needed. Work will be accomplished at the Athens-Clarke County Library.  

This position requires dependability, superb customer service performance, tact, knowledge of library policies and procedures. The ideal candidate must be well organized and detailed-oriented; must be able to work independently and in a team environment; must be adaptable to varying job assignments.  The ability to start, finish, or pick up work projects at various points is vital. This position reports to the Collection Management Supervisor.

Minimum Training and Experience

This is an entry level though specialized position.  College degree and experience in libraries/technical services departments is preferred. Or, any equivalent combination of education, training & experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills & abilities for the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job.  Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments may change in the future.

  • Under the guidance of the Collection Management Supervisor creates holdings records for new materials in the PINES Evergreen ILS by searching & matching to pre-existing bibliographic records
  • Under the guidance of the Collection Management Supervisor imports OCLC WorldCat bibliographic records via Z39.50 client
  • Updates bibliographic and holding data in the local catalog manually; withdraws material as needed
  • Assist Collection Management Supervisor and Collection Development Librarian as needed
  • Other duties of a similar nature as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and adherence to established PINES matching criteria for all major formats (such as books, sound recordings, and video materials)
  • Ability to search PINES efficiently and accurately
  • Ability to plan, organize and/or prioritize daily tasks and work activities; ability to work independently toward established goals
  • General knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Library System as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position
  • Personal computer proficiency; ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques as necessary in the completion of daily assignments; ability to adapt to new technologies 
  • Knowledge of and skill in delivering excellent external and internal customer service
  • Ability and desire to work with details in an efficient and accurate manner
  • Ability to answer questions and to explain procedures to co-workers
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with management, employees, members of the general public
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all library units to improve library service delivery to the public; ability to work in a pleasant, professional and effective manner with patrons, staff, coworkers, other departments of the library
  • Knowledge of all normal and emergency building emergency procedures
  • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance
