Summer Reading Program for Children

This year's theme Build a Better World encourages children and families to keep reading during the summer months. Reading during the summer is important for children so that they can maintain and improve their reading skills. Summer is a time for children to read books and magazines or listen to audiobooks about topics of interest to them. Children joining the Summer Reading Program (SRP) can earn prizes for time spent reading or listening to materials. Pre-readers earn certificates and prizes by having others read to them. When older children read to younger children, both children earn credit for the program.

Who is it for?

Children ages 0-10 years old. Children 10 years old may decide to participate in either the Children's or our Young Adult Summer Program.

How do I participate?

Pick up a Build a Better World reading log, bookmark, and calendar of events in the Children's Area or at the Circulation Desk. Prizes are earned by recording the names of the books you read or the number of hours you read. If you decide to count by time spent reading, you will write down the title every time you read for 30 minutes. You may combine the two. Present your reading log to our staff to be stamped and receive prizes.

What are the prizes?

  • Complete 1st page of reading log, 17 books or 8.5 hours (30 minutes per line): Name tag & Door Hanger.
  • Complete 2nd page of reading log, 34 books or 17 hours (30 minutes per line): Build a Better World Summer Reading Certificate & Sticker.
  • Complete 3rd page of reading log, 50 books or 25 hours (30 minutes per line): Inflatable Neon Hammer & a book of your choice.

Finale Party, July 26 after the 10:30 a.m. program at the Royston Library and after the 1:30 p.m. program at the Lavonia Library. All attending participants will be recognized and pictured in the newspaper.

NOTE to Elementary Students & Parents/Caregivers: In order to be eligible for recognition at elementary schools (if your school does this), students must give their reading log to their teacher or media specialist at the beginning of the school year. The library will not have a record of SRP participants.

Friday, August 4 - This is the last day to receive prizes for the 2017 Summer Reading Program.
